PRESIDENT MESSAGE

The field of Surgical Oncology has made rapid progress in the North-east part of India over the past few years. The North-east India is called the “Cancer Capital of India” as the highest incidence of some cancer occurs in this part of the country. As for example Esophagus in Meghalaya, Stomach in Mizoram, Gall Bladder in Assam, Nasopharyngeal in Nagaland and so on. Surgery plays a major role in the multidisciplinary treatment of Cancer. As such there was a need of development of proper Surgical Oncology discipline in this region. Surgical Oncology has grown to be a major and well sought after Superspeciality subject in the country. Though Superspeciality courses and training in Surgical Oncology were being conducted in other parts of the country for quiet a long time, its relatively new in this region. Surgical procedures in Oncology are difficult, time consuming and needs lot of planning, dedication and team work. Moreover, it requires specialized training after postgraduation, in dedicated oncology centres under dedicated and experienced mentors. Initially, there were only few centres dedicated to cancer along with isolated surgical procedures being done in some government as well as private centres. Gradually, people came to realize about the burden of cancer in this region and gave more and more importance to develop facilities for cancer surgical procedures. Previously patients from this region used to visit centres outside this region for diagnosis and treatment. But with time and with the development of better facilities in many centres, complex cancer surgical procedures are being done routinely by numerous well-trained surgeons. All types of cancer surgical procedures including reconstructive procedures, minimaly invasive and robotic surgeries are being done which are at par with anywhere in the country and there is no need for patients to go outside this region for treatment anymore. Realizing the potential and load of cancer treatment in this region, the government, corporate and private sectors are developing cancer centres in almost all districts of Assam and other sates of North-east India. Some of the medical colleges have developed separate dedicated cancer centres attached with all facilities including Radiation and sate of the art Operation theatres along with Chemotherapy units. In the past Cancer surgical procedures were undertaken in General Surgery units of government and private hospitals in the North-east India. Initially, few of the surgeons, after completing General Surgery training, dedicated themselves to Cancer care by taking up the Surgical Oncology subject following training in major centres in Metro cities. This trend once started continued with more and more surgeons taking up the subject and this has become the most sought after surgical superspeciality subject in recent times. With time the number of practicing surgical oncologist increased and at present there are around 100 full time surgeons in the entire North-east region including 8 states. Surgical Oncology as a subject is rapidly developing and progressing with newer techniques and procedures coming up day by day. As such it has become essential for surgical oncologist to keep themselves updated with the latest techniques and technologies. And for this regular interactions and meeting have become essential for us. In view of this, an association named North-east Association of Surgical Oncology (NASO) was constituted in the year 2021 including Onco-surgeons from all the 8 states of the North-east region. We are planning to hold regular conferences, meetings and workshops for the regular upgradation and knowledge of the practicing surgeons and also for the up-coming junior surgeons and students. The first Annual Conference of NASO is going to be held at Shillong, Meghalaya being conducted by The Department of Surgical Oncology, NEIGHRIMS, Shillong. I on behalf of the association wish the conference a great success also wish a bright future to NASO.
